The territory of the Danube Delta is a real ethnic mosaic that brings together several nationalities such as Tatars, Greeks, Turks or Lipovans who live here in complete harmony and understanding.
They left their mark on the cosmopolitan culture of this area through their traditions, the music and the dance being perhaps the best preserved to this day. And since the largest community is that of Lipovan Russians, we can most often hear their songs. On the lively rhythms of the harmonica, or “harmoşca” in Russian, an instrument similar to the accordion, the lyrics speak about the life of the ancestors, traditions, fishing or old rituals, like that “Devişnic”, a sort of a party dedicated to young single girls.
All songs, both Lipovan and belonging to other minorities, are accompanied by specific dances, varied in style and rhythm, which reveal the life experience, spirit and identity of each ethnic group. Among all the most spectacular are the Greek ones, mostly staged by artistic groups of the Greek community; the majority of them are based in Sulina and one even belongs to the UNESCO International Dance Council. During the entire summer season, "Greek Evenings" are organized on the city's waterfront and tourists can enjoy dances from all over Greece, performed with great dedication and talent.
