Beaches

The main beaches in the Danube Delta, those located near the towns of Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe, are indeed among the most appreciated along the entire Romanian coastline, not only for their extremely fine sand but also for their wild beauty.

They both shelter the “convolvulus persicus”, a plant species protected by law, and are connected by a beach about 30 km long, interrupted only by a few channels flowing into the sea. The beach from Sulina has a rich history, the city being declared a bathing resort in 1927 and offering, according to the media of the time, "the healing grace of sun's rays on the sandy stretches of beach"; in the 1980s, sand-packing was used to treat rheumatic diseases and also in 1927 a casino was opened on the beach and soirees were organized, with brass band music.

Today both Sfântu Gheorghe and Sulina beach remain the tourists' favorites. Water at Sulina beach has an interesting feature: it changes its turbidity and salinity according to wind direction. At Sfântu Gheorghe the water is usually clearer and the mouth of Sfântu Gheorghe arm can be approached directly from the beach, but although the water is not very deep (approx. 2 - 2.5 m), swimming near it is not recommended.

In the area of the Danube Delta there are also other beaches to be visited, such as Perișor beach or the one at Gura Portiței holiday village.
